Andy Deen is a music educator and oboist living in Central Florida. He recently accepted the Band Director position at Lake Minneola High School, where he leads the marching, concert, jazz, and indoor programs. Before coming to Lake Minneola, he taught five years at The Villages High School, where he led the Buffalo Band to the FMBC State Finals in 2016.
Andy was raised in a musical household with parents that have long supported the value of music education. He began piano in first grade and oboe in sixth grade and was an active participant in middle and high school band programs. Andy attended Brookwood High School in Snellville, GA and performed in the marching band and in the Wind Symphony, the top band. He represented Brookwood at the GMEA All-State Bands for three consecutive seasons. After graduating from Brookwood, he attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania as a member of the inaugural class of the Sunderman Conservatory of Music. Andy studied oboe with Edward Stanley and served as Drum Major of the Bullets Marching Band for three seasons. He also worked towards a minor in Civil War-Era Studies and earned a Mellon Research Grant to study the evolution of the soundtrack in Civil War Film.
After Graduating Summa Cum Laude from Gettysburg, Andy returned to his home state of Florida to enroll at the University of Florida, where he earned the Master of Music Degree with Concentrations in Performance and Music Education. Andy studied oboe with Dr. Leslie Odom and performed in the UF Orchestra and Wind Ensemble and in two professional recording projects. As a graduate assistant, he worked with the UF Gator Band and conducted the Basketball Pep Bands in tournament trips to New Orleans and Nashville. During his final year of Graduate coursework, Andy became the part-time band director at St. Francis Catholic School in Gainesville and taught two periods of band daily.
Andy lives in central Florida with his wife Kathryn and their cats KitKat and Pumpkin. He continues to perform as an oboist with several churches throughout Central Florida. For more information, please visit Andydeen.com
